VICE CHANCELLOR OF NNAMDI AZIKIWE UNIVERSITY PAYS A COURTESY VISIT TO NNRA

The Director General of Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) Dr. Yau Idris received the Vice Chancellor (VC) of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Charles Esimone and Staff of the Department of Radiography and Radiological Science during a courtesy visit to the Authority’s Headquarters in Abuja, on 23rd August, 2021.

The visit centered on the proposed establishment of a Diagnostic Reference Levels (DRLS) in the institution for radiological practices in Nigeria, and the presentation of documents to that effect.

Dr. Yau Idris in his welcome address highlighted the activities of the Authority as it relates to all the regulated sectors of the economy, reiterating that NNRA protects users, handlers, and the public from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation.  He explained that NNRA regulates educational facilities, gives licenses to bottling companies, carries out supervisory functions on road constructions and also regulates hotels that use baggage scanner thereby contributing to the growth of the national economy.

The DG stated that it is pertinent for the University’s team to present an overview of the proposal to the Authority’s larger house for proper study and understanding, which might possibly lead to signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) if all parties are in agreement.

The Dean, Faculty of Radiography and Radiological Sciences, Prof. Christian Nzotta stated that the Laboratory for the project is already equipped and can be adjusted to suit best practice standards. He solicited for more collaboration and partnership with NNRA especially as pertains to the facility development and equipment management.

The VC, Prof Esimone appreciated the management of NNRA for the warm reception and for enlightening them on the mandate and activities of NNRA. He thereafter presented the DG with a copy of the proposed Diagnostic Reference Levels document.
