Medical Application Safety
Divisions in Medical Application Safety Department
The Department is made up of the following Divisions; Medical Application and Dose Management. The Divisions are subdivided into the following Units: Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, Radiotherapy, Nuclear Medicine, Patient Dose Management/Registry and National Dose Management/Registry.
The Units mandates and activities are as follows:
- Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology Unit is responsible for:
- Regulatory oversight of diagnostic and Interventional radiology medical facilities
- Development and review of regulations and guides relevant to diagnostic and interventional radiology facilities
- Review and Assessment of relevant technical reports and documentation submitted for authorization(s);
- Survey of ionizing radiation emitting equipment in diagnostic radiology practices and maintenance of established inventory;
- Establishing diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) in conjunction with other relevant stakeholders for use of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology to ensure dose optimization;
- Any other assigned role by the Authority.
2. Radiotherapy Unit is responsible for:
- Regulatory oversight of Radiotherapy Facilities in Nigeria;
- Review and Assessment of relevant technical reports and documentation submitted for authorization(s);
- Development and review of regulations and guides relevant to radiotherapy practices;
- Any other assigned role by the Authority.
3. Nuclear Medicine Unit is responsible for:
- Regulatory oversight of Nuclear Medicine Facilities in Nigeria;
- Review and Assessment of relevant technical reports and documentation for authorization(s);
- Development and review of regulations and guides relevant to Nuclear Medicine practices
- Any other assigned role by the Authority.
4. Patient Dose Management/Registry (PDM) Unit
- Developing and updating of template for reporting patient dose by facilities using ionization radiation sources;
- Carrying out survey of facilities in use of ionizing radiation sources to ensure patient dose optimization;
- Carrying out oversight functions to facilities using ionizing radiation sources in order to ensure compliance with established guide(s) on patient dose management;
- Any other assigned role by the Authority.
5. National Dose Management/Registry (NDM) Unit
- Establishment of both local and national reference levels in conjunction with other relevant stakeholders;
- Documentation of the occupational and patient dose obtained from facilities using ionizing radiation sources;
- Collation, evaluation and analyzing patient/occupational dose and comparing with international established standard;
- Compare Effective Dose of patient with International standard
- Any other assigned role by the Director General/CEO.
