SENATE COMMITTEE ON PETROLEUM RESOURCES UPSTREAM VISITED THE NNRA FOR OVERSIGHT FUNCTION

The Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream) was at the NNRA Headquarters on 1st February, 2022 to perform its oversight function.

According to the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Bassey Albert, the Committee came to review, monitor and supervise the activities and policy implementation of the Authority in line with the provision of the Acts of National Assembly, Policies, and Programmes approved in the national budget. He said, “the routine oversight function is carried out in order to ensure effectiveness, efficiency and good performance of NNRA”.

The DG, Dr. Yau Idris in his remark, briefed the Committee on the overall functions of the NNRA which is ensuring nuclear safety and radiological protection in Nigeria as mandated in the Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Acts of 1995; the Act that established the Authority and further explained the involvement of NNRA in the diverse sectors of the economy which are but not limited to; Oil and Gas which covers about 70 percent of NNRA’s regulatory functions, Health Sector, in terms of radiotherapy, nuclear medicine and diagnostic radiology (X-ray), Mineral Mining, Manufacturing, Construction, Security and Customs, Education, Research and Development – Research Reactor in Zaria, GAMMA Irradiation at SHETSCO in Abuja, among others.

The DG and his management team led the Committee on a tour round to the Nuclear Security Center (NSC) for inspection. The visit was then sealed with a group photograph.
