Earlier today, participants of the ongoing Regional Training Course on the School of Radiation Emergency Management, organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and coordinated by the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA), undertook a technical visit to the Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF) located in Sheda, Abuja.
The visit formed a key component of the hands-on training segment of the course, aimed at enhancing participants’ understanding of emergency preparedness, radiation detection systems, and response strategies in radiation-prone environments.
The delegation was warmly received by Engr. Tajudeen K. Mustapha, Director and Head of the Gamma Irradiation Facility, who welcomed them on behalf of the Acting Chairman of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC), Engr. Anthony Ekedegwa. In his remarks, Engr. Mustapha emphasized the facility’s pivotal role in advancing the peaceful applications of nuclear technology in Nigeria, as well as its adherence to both national and international radiation safety standards.
During a guided tour of the facility, participants observed various emergency response tools, radiation monitoring systems, and safety mechanisms in action. The visit provided valuable practical exposure, enabling participants to engage in technical discussions and gain firsthand experience in best practices for radiation emergency management.
