The Plateau State Operational Office paid a courtesy visit to the Department of State Services (DSS), Plateau State Command, and the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), Plateau State Command on Monday, 26th September, 2023.
Mr. Vontau N. Timkat, Acting State Coordinator of the Plateau State Operational Office and who led the NNRA team submitted at both meetings that the purpose of the visits was to foster cooperation and work synergy between the security agencies and the NNRA in the areas of interest, particularly in ensuring safety and security of radioactive sources and nuclear materials used in the mining sector of the State.
He stressed the need to enhance the safe handling of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORMs) and its residues arising from the mining, milling, processing, and storage of mineral ores on the public.
Mr. Timkat remarked that NNRA is committed to providing protection against the harmful radiation hazards inherent in mining activities by ensuring that operators adhere to the guidelines contained in the provisions of the Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Act and other NNRA regulations.
The DSS Plateau State Director, A.O Ogbole, FSI who was ably represented by A.O Adeyanju expressed satisfaction with the visit and termed it ‘’timely stating that it was the statutory responsibility of the Department of State Services to ensure the actualization of the mandates of national agencies in the country of which NNRA is no exception.
He pledged to assign a liaison officer to assist in facilitating the synergy in upholding regulatory standards on the Plateau and assured maximum cooperation with the NNRA's Plateau State Operational Office, in ensuring total compliance by the mining facilities.
In the same vein, the NPF Plateau State Commandant, Okoro Julius Alawari, in his remarks, pledged the support of the Nigerian Police Force, especially through the Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit of the Command, to work hand in hand with the NNRA in achieving regulatory control of mining activities in the State.
