Officials of the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) led by Mrs. Ememobong Essien visited the State Commissioner of Health, Professor Augustine Vincent Umoh, on 10th March, 2022 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The purpose of the visit was to officially inform the Honourable Commissioner of the establishment of NNRA operational Office in Akwa Ibom, the activities of the NNRA and how the state will benefit.
Speaking during the visit, Mrs Ememobong Essien, Uyo Operational Office Head, outlined some of NNRA’s activities which include but not limited to inspections, licensing, and ensuring nuclear safety and radiological protection of all apparatus emitting ionizing radiation in the country.
She informed that NNRA established an office in Uyo to carry out its core functions of controlling and regulating the use, possession and application of radioactive substances and to ensure the protection of life, health, property and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation.
Mrs Essien stated that NNRA is working towards bringing hospitals and diagnostics facilities in the state under regulatory control and introduced the recently launched NNRA Safe X-Ray to the Commissioner. She solicited the cooperation of the Ministry for the use of the App in the State as it will further ensure safety of all users, handlers and the public from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation.
While responding, Prof Umoh, appreciated the Operational Head and her team for the visit and stressed the need for collaboration between the Authority and Directors of Medical Services and Planning, Research and Statistics of the Ministry for proper understanding of NNRA’s mandates.
In attendance also were the Permanent Secretary, Directors and staff of the Ministry of health and NNRA staff.
