NNRA TRAINS STAFF ON ENVIRONMENTAL RADIATION MONITORING USING GIS, ENVI SOFTWARE

The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) organized a 5 day-training on “Target and Anomaly Detection for Proxy Mapping and Environment Monitoring from 6th to 10th June, 2022 at Abuja, Nigeria.

The main goal of the programme is to equip participants with the basic knowledge of   Geographic Information System (GIS) and related geospatial tools such as Hyperspectral and its application in the context of NNRA’s mandates

Declaring the training open, Dr. Nasirudeen Bello, General Manager Nuclear Safety, Physical Security and Safeguards who represented the DG/CEO, Dr. Yau Idris thanked the organizers of the workshop and the technical partners, Hy-Dar Geospatial for building on the past experience that NNRA has with the subject matter. He congratulated the participants and urged them to give maximum commitment to the training.

Dr. Bello further stated that the training is important and very strategic especially as Nigeria is embarking on Nuclear Power Programme where sighting and licensing is required and data collation is needed.

He said that the Authority’s GIS Office has been enjoying continuous development in term of infrastructure for maximum data output. Dr. Bello further remarked that the participants should take advantage of the training and come out better in their different offices when called upon to discharge their duties.

Speaking at the Opening Ceremony, Dr.Aliyu Jafar, Head of Hy-Dar Geospatial Consulting Team appreciated the Management of NNRA for the opportunity bestowed on them to conduct this important training.  He affirmed that the team will give their best and also introduce another software called ENVI which is basically for mapping and analysis.

 Dr. Jafar, said all the presentations will be tailored to the need of NNRA and encouraged the participants to make the best use of the opportunity which will be of great help while discharging their duties in their various Departments.

Dr. Nasiru Zakariya, Deputy General Manager, Project Management, thanked the Management for their unwavering effort to train and re-train staff of the Authority. Participants were drawn from different Departments of the Authority.
