NNRA TRAINS REGULATORS ON RADIATION SAFETY IN INDUSTRIAL RADIOGRAPHY

The NNRA kicked off a 5-day National Training Course (NTC) for Regulators in Industrial Radiography, from November 4th - 8th, 2024 in Lagos, Nigeria.

The NTC was conducted in collaboration with Abdul One Multi-Project Limited. The training aimed to enhance the regulatory staff's capacity professionally on review and oversight activities to ensure the safe operation of industrial radiography practices in Nigeria; in line with best practice.

The event was declared open by the DG/CEO of NNRA, Dr. Yau Idris, represented by Mr. Audu Mohammed - GM, Research Reactor Safety and Safeguards. In his opening speech, the DG highlighted the importance of industrial radiography in oil and gas, and manufacturing industries for integrity testing. He emphasized his commitment to continue developing the capacity to strengthen the regulatory control regime for all activities and practices involving ionizing radiation.

The DG/CEO urged the participants to pay strict attention and ensure the development of new and emerging inspection techniques to enhance efficiency and compliance for the protection of lives and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation. He also expressed appreciation to the facilitators of the NTC for sparing time to educate and refresh the participants.

The training had participants numbering over 70 and was comprehensive with interactions and exercises to reflect the Regulatory function and duties of NNRA Staff.

This was one of the most impactful training the Regulators have had in recent times as the training elaborated the actual field situation and use case scenario in the regulatory function of the NNRA.

Certificates were presented to participants at the end of the Training after series of exercises and quiz session.

The NTC is part of the NNRA efforts to ensure nuclear safety and radiation protection in Nigeria and to meet Nigeria’s international obligation for the peaceful use of nuclear technology.
