NNRA TRAINS ITS OFFICERS ON REGULATORY INSPECTION OF RESEARCH REACTORS

The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) organised a five-day training course on Regulatory Inspection of Research Reactors at its headquarters in Abuja from 7th – 11th August 2023.

The objective of the training course was to provide the participants with the knowledge, information, and tools to:

  1. Learn and understand the framework of regulatory control and the role and functions of the NNRA.
  2. Understand the basis for developing the NNRA regulatory inspection programmes for research reactors in accordance with national and international safety standards.
  3. Learn and practice the different steps and tasks for developing and implementing a regulatory inspection programme for research reactors.
  4. Gain hands-on experience in regulatory inspections for research reactors.
  5. Gain hands-on experience in reporting results and findings of regulatory inspections and in formulating the associated regulatory requirements to be sent to the operating organization.

Speaking at the Training, the Director General/CEO, Dr. Yau Usman Idris who was represented by the General Manager, Nuclear Safety and Security Department, Dr. Nasiru-Deen A. Bello stated that the aim of the training was to build the capacity of participants to provide regulatory oversight of research reactors in Nigeria. He urged participants to take advantage of the training to improve their performance in the discharge of their duties and maximise their effectiveness.

The General Manager, Nuclear Research Reactor Safety and Safeguards Department, Mr Audu Mohammed appreciated the Management of the Authority for approving the organization of the programme. The General Manager noted that the Training Course was planned to be interactive and engaging. He therefore encouraged participants to seek clarifications to improve their understanding of the subject matter. He hoped that at the end of the Training Course, participants should be able to train their colleagues to achieve the mandate of the Authority.

The Training Course had in attendance forty participants drawn from various Departments of the Authority. The resource persons included seasoned and experienced Officers of the Authority who provided practical information and guidance on the subject matter.
