NNRA STRENGTHENS COLLABORATION WITH POLICE EOD/CBRN DIVISION ON NUCLEAR AND RADIOLOGICAL SECURITY

The NNRA on Thursday, 23rd October 2025, hosted the Commissioner of Police in charge of Explosive Ordnance Disposal/Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD/CBRN), CP Hauwa Ibrahim, and her team on a re-engagement visit to the Authority.

The visit forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration between the NNRA and the NPF in ensuring effective radiological safety and security across the country.

In her remarks, CP Hauwa Ibrahim expressed appreciation to the NNRA for its continued support in capacity building and coordination of nuclear security activities. She emphasized the need for enhanced training  and retraining for EOD officers on radioactive material management and threat response, as well as the provision of specialized equipment to improve operational effectiveness and implementation of safety recommendations.

Welcoming the delegation, the DG/CEO of NNRA, Dr. Yau Idris, reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to deepening collaboration with the Police EOD/CBRN Division towards strengthening the national nuclear security framework. He noted that the NNRA, through its Nuclear Safety and Security Department and the National Nuclear Security Coordination Centre (NNSCC), will continue to support the Division through targeted training, technical assistance, and joint exercises aimed at enhancing national response capabilities in line with international best practices.

Both parties identified key areas to strengthen collaboration, including:

  • Support for ongoing EOD training, to include resource persons from NNRA
  • Simulation exercises to enhance Emergency Preparedness and Response (EPR) mechanisms.
  • Joint oversight of hospitals, radiography, and nuclear medicine facilities
  • Engagement with mining operators for regulatory control.
  • Coordination of movement of radioactive sources from border points to authorized sites

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to deepen cooperation in enhancing national readiness for nuclear and radiological emergencies and promote the safe and secure management of radioactive materials in Nigeria.
