A delegation from the South- South Zonal Office paid a courtesy visit to the Imo State Commissioner of Environment and Sanitation; Barrister Major E. Emenike at his office in Owerri-Imo State on 25th July, 2024.
The visit was to collaborate with the Ministry concerning activities being carried out by the NNRA in Imo State and also seek support while carrying out its regulatory functions.
Dr. Mrs. Stella Ovuomarie-Kevin Assistant General Manager, (Medical) represented the NNRA where she thanked the Commissioner for receiving the team and stated that the visit was to acquaint the commissioner with the activities of the Authority especially as Imo State was one of the States recently added to the jurisdiction of the South-South Zonal Office.
Dr. Ovuomarie-Kevin stated that the visit had become necessary in order to seek for collaboration with the State Ministry of Environment and Sanitation to bring Non- Destructive Testing (NDT) companies and other facilities that work with scrap metals under regulatory control as the Authority was mandated to protect lives, health, property and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation. She emphasized the importance of regulating these facilities as some have great radiological impact on health and the environment.
The Commissioner expressed his willingness to work with and support the NNRA in ensuring that scrap metals which are littered all around the State are handled appropriately, stating that the danger is the ignorance of its adverse effects on health and environment by the unaware public.
He encouraged NNRA to increase the awareness of its activities and reach out to more relevant stakeholders in order to achieve greater sensitization of the public thereby meeting its mandate.
