History was made on the 8th of September 2021, at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), heralding a new partnership between the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) and the National Environmental Standards & Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA).The MoU is to ensure environmental safety and security in nuclear and radiological activities in Nigeria.
Speaking at the occasion, DG/CEO of NNRA, Dr. Yau Idris, welcomed the Management of NESREA and expressed his delight at the MoU, stating that this was the first time NNRA is signing an MoU with fellow regulators in Nigeria.
He further highlighted some of the activities of NNRA and said that the Authority remains, a committed organization that regulates the possession and application of radioactive substances and devices emitting ionizing radiation.
Dr.Idris also stated that ‘’collaborating with the NESREA will be of immense benefit to the nation especially in tackling the harmful effects of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) found in Mining and oil and gas exploiting areas of Nigeria
Responding, DG/CEO of NESREA, Prof. Aliyu Jauro, said partnering with NNRA emanated from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mission on Infrastructure Review to Nigeria. IAEA advised that both Agencies have a formal working document that will ensure synergy and harmonious relationship in the discharge of their duties towards protecting the environment and human health.
He reiterated NESREA’s commitment to partner with the NNRA and other related Agencies by organizing programmes that will proffer solution to the issues of air quality, flooding and pollution using nuclear technology. He appreciated the Management of the Authority for the warm reception, urging the Committee members to take the engagements as an important national assignment.
