The NNRA, guided by its mandate to protect lives, property, and the environment from the harmful effects of
ionizing radiation convened a meeting with representatives of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria (ABUTH); Center for Energy Research and Training (CERT) Zaria, the Department of State Services (DSS); the Police Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) Unit and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) at the NNRA Headquarters, Abuja.
The meeting addressed concerns surrounding the unauthorized movement of radioactive sources and the need to ensure strict adherence to established safety and security protocols.
The meeting ended with the NNRA revoking the license issued to CERT for the operation of its Temporary Radioactive Waste Storage Facility located in Zaria. The decision meant that CERT cannot move or receive radioactive sources into or out of its facility.
At the meeting the DG NNRA Dr. Yau Idris emphasized the critical importance of compliance with regulations governing the transportation, handling, and storage of radioactive materials and highlighted that this proactive engagement underscores NNRA’s dedication to enhance awareness, ensuring public safety, and maintaining trust in the management of sensitive materials.
He called on all institutions involved in the use and management of radioactive materials to prioritize adherence to established guidelines on safeguard personnel, the public, and the environment.
