A 4-man team from the Nigerian Glass Community (NGC) visited the DG/CEO NNRA on 16th March 2022 at the NNRA Headquarters in Abuja. The visit was aimed at discussing issues on research and development of glass in Nigeria.

The team lead, Dr. Umar Aliyu while speaking stated that NGC which is a member of the International Commission on Glass (ICG) comprises of glass researchers, industrialists and glass artists and considers NNRA a key stakeholder in glass development in Nigeria as nuclear technology in form of nucleonic gauging is applied in the manufacture of glass. He further stated that following the pronouncement of “2022 as the year of Glass” by the United Nations, General Assembly, this necessitated the visit to seek collaboration with the NNRA in the area of research and development of a lead free radiation shielding glass for the country.

Dr. Isa Sambo General Manager, Radiological Safety Department who spoke on behalf of the DG NNRA Dr. Yau Idris said there is need for this kind of collaboration since the NNRA’s Institute of Radiation Protection and Research in Ibadan (NIRPR) carries out research in radiation protection especially the use of lead free glasses. He asked the team to come up with a proposal with details of the proposed research and assured them of NNRA’s continuous support in achieving the set goal.
