NNRA PARTNERS WITH FEDERAL MINISTRY OF MINES AND STEEL DEVELOPMENT, AND PLATEAU MINERAL DEVELOPMENT COMPANY FOR ENHANCED MINING REGULATIONS

The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) through its Plateau Operational Office paid a courtesy visit to the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, North Central Zonal Office, Jos, and the Plateau Mineral Development Company (PMDC) on 11th and 17th of July, 2023 respectively.

The Acting State Coordinator NNRA, Plateau Operational Office, Mr. Vontau Nimkur Timkat, in his presentation during both visits highlighted the functions of the NNRA which is primarily to ensure safety and security of radioactive sources and nuclear materials thereby protecting lives, health, property and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation, stating that its functions in the mining sector cannot be over emphasized. He stressed on the challenges of mining activities on the Plateau and the need to seek stronger synergy and collaboration with Stakeholders towards nation building.

The Managing Director PMDC, in his remarks, commended NNRA’s efforts in discharging its activities effectively and efficiently and promised to give maximum support to the Authority to ensure smooth operation in achieving its goal.

The Zonal Mining Officer, Dr. Muhammed Ridwan, said that having the NNRA on ground will be beneficial to the Ministry of Mines, the Solid Mineral Industry and the Nation at large. He maintained that this collaboration is timely and will assist the agencies discharge their functions without overlap or any rivalry.
