A meeting on Nuclear Security culture enhancement was held between Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) and the Nuclear Security Culture Program (NSCP) on 10th May, 2022 at the training room of the National Nuclear Security Coordination Center (NNSCC), Abuja. Professor Christopher Hobbs of King’s College London led the NSCP Team that attended the meeting.
Mr. Adamu Abdul, the Coordinator of the NNSCC made a presentation titled “Overview of Nigeria’s Nuclear Security Activities” on behalf of the NNRA DG/CEO. The presentation emphasized on the roles and responsibilities of the NNRA & the NNSCC, and the efforts to promote nuclear security in Nigeria.
The NNRA at the end of its presentation outlined possible areas that the NSCP could intervene. They include: organization of national training course for NNSCC instructors, fellowship for NNSCC personnel in UK facilities to build competence on radiation detection equipment maintenance, national training course for nuclear security inspectors, and the equipping of Physical Protection Laboratory with table top test beds.
The NSCP team in their response promised to consider, providing training courses and tabletop test beds for the NNSCC, adversary sequence and modeling capabilities, development of nuclear security culture programmes for the Centre and the review of the training materials already developed by the Centre. The NSCP team equally agreed to contact Oakridge National Laboratory with the intention of contributing to the NNRA’s Human Reliability Program (HRP) regulatory framework development.
The NSCP team took a tour of the laboratories of the NNSCC which include the Physical Protection Systems Laboratory, Nuclear Security Detection Equipment Laboratory and the ICT Laboratory.
