The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) held a 3-day summit themed Petroleum Downstream Deregulation and Gas Utilization (PEALS) for a Sustainable Energy Future from 9th – 11th October, 2023 in Abuja.
The summit was the second edition and gathered PENGASSAN members from Government and Private owned organizations in the Oil and Gas Industry who shared insights, strategies and experiences in order to address critical issues in the sector such as divestment, Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS) subsidy removal and the role of the Nigerian oil workers.
The NNRA was represented by the General Manager, Admin and Human Resources (AHR), Mr. Mathias Vyonku and had as its keynote speaker, the General Manager, Radiological Safety Department; Dr. Isa Sambo who delivered a paper on the “Pathways to a Sustainable Energy Future in Nigeria”. He submitted that the importance of nuclear energy cannot be over emphasized hence the need for Nigeria to go “nuclear” just like many other countries have already, advising the Government to invest in experts through training, research, development and channel part of the subsidy funds towards nuclear energy actualization as the existing road map already shows that by 2025, Nigeria would have a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). He emphasized that steady power supply through the inclusion of nuclear power in the energy mix of the Nigeria will promote industrialization, employment opportunities, security and boost the economy of the nation
"It is time to take urgent actions to ensure sustainable energy future for our great country because tomorrow starts now" he said.
Other organizations at the summit included; Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), TotalEnergies, Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Authority (NMDPRA), Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), Schneider Electric, and Indorama Petrochemical Limited amongst others.
The event had award presentations to deserving PENGASSAN members and organizations who have continued to partner and support the activities of PENGASSAN. NNRA was not left out as the GM AHR, Mr. Vyonku accompanied by NNRA PENGASSAN representatives received the Management Award on behalf of the DG/CEO, Dr. Yau Idris
Amongst the personalities that attended the Opening Ceremony were; Minister of Labour and Employment; Mr. Simon Lalong, Representative of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation; Mr. Simon Tyangyu, GMD Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL); Mr. Mele Kyari, Representative of the Senate President, Chairman Senate Committee on Gas; Senator Jarigbe Agom, Representative of the DG/CEO of the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority; Mr. Vyonku Mathias, General Manager Admin and Human Resources, past and present PENGASSAN and TUC leaders and few representatives of energy companies.
The summit ended with a grand gala and award night where PENGASSAN members dined and networked to promote the unity of the union. The high point of the occasion was the presentation of gifts to winners of the PENGASSAN National Essay Competition on National Discourse and the first position was won by Okoya Oluwateniola of the Corona Schools, Ogun State who was presented a cash gift of One Million Naira.
