NNRA ORGANIZES WORKSHOP ON THERMAL HYDRAULIC FOR NUCLEAR REACTOR

The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) organized a 5-day workshop on Thermal Hydraulic for Nuclear Reactor Applications for its regulators from 19th-23rd September, 2022 in Abuja Nigeria.

The workshop is in line with the NNRA’s Strategic Focus and aims at prioritizing development of national capabilities for safety analysis and safety evaluation of applications for licensing Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) in Nigeria. The workshop also aims at providing participants with adequate knowledge of the physical process involved in nuclear reactor, of reactor thermal hydraulic, thermal hydraulic simulation and codes for reactor design and safety analysis.

Declaring the workshop open, the DG/CEO NNRA, Dr. Yau Idris who was ably represented by the General Manager, Authority and Enforcement Department, Mr. Adamu Hussaini welcomed the participants and stated that the workshop on thermal hydraulic is meant to consolidate the knowledge gained during the national training course on regulatory control of nuclear power plants in 2021 and the penultimate Basic Professional Training Course on Nuclear Safety held in 2020.

He said, since Nigeria has made commitment and is embarking on a nuclear power program which will translate into generation of several megawatts of electricity using nuclear technology, the nation therefore relies on the Authority to play a key role in ensuring safety and security of the NPPs in Nigeria. He urged the participants to take the training serious and give in their all in acquiring competence towards effective regulatory oversight of NPPs.

The workshop drew regulators from Zonal, State Operational and Head Offices of the NNRA as well as the National Institute of Radiation Protection and Research, Ibadan.
