NNRA ORGANIZES WORKSHOP ON INSIDER THREATS AND MITIGATION MEASURES IN THE NUCLEAR INDUSTRY AND OTHER HIGH RISK MATERIALS, FACILITIES AND INFORMATION

A 2-day Workshop on insider threats and mitigation measures in the nuclear industry and other high risk materials, facilities and information was organized by the Nuclear Security Center (NSC) of the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) from 5th-6th April, 2022 in Abuja.

The objective of the workshop was to share nuclear industry’s experience on insider threats with other strategic stakeholders in the nuclear, security and other strategic organizations. It is also to re-emphasize the threats, analyze its complex nature and identify measures against the insider threats.

During the opening ceremony, the DG/CEO NNRA Dr. Yau Idris who was represented by the Coordinator of the Nuclear Security Center, Mr. Adamu Abdul welcomed the participants and thanked them for honoring the invite. He remarked that various security challenges facing the country necessitated the need to train officers in national strategic agencies with appropriate knowledge and skills to mitigate internal threats within the system.

Mr. Faruk Ingawa, the Deputy General Manager, Radiological Safety in his good will message, advised the participants to take the workshop seriously and hoped that at the end of the training, all the relevant agencies will be aware of insider threats and mitigating measures to curb the threats in their respective organizations.

The programme for the workshop included paper presentations, discussions, case studies, exercises, videos, questions, answers and feedback.

The training drew participants from National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Department of State Services (DSS), Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company (NSPMC), Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC), Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command (NACWC)and Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA).

At the end of the programme, participants thanked the NNRA Management for organizing such an eye opening workshop, and recommended that the NNRA collaborates with national and international organizations with similar objectives to enhance security thereby minimizing insider threats.
