
The NNRA has issued both a Registration of Premises Certificate and an Operation Licence to Mangal Cement, a major Nigerian cement brand produced by Mangal Industries Limited, to deploy advanced radiation-based equipment in its 3 million metric tonne per annum capacity plant located in Moba, Kogi State, Nigeria.
Mangal Industries Limited is one of the hundreds of manufacturing companies granted authorization to use industrial radiation sources and equipment in their factories. Others include: Dangote Cement, Obajana Cement, Dangote Refinery, African Wood Industries Nigeria Limited, Delta Steel Co. Ltd., Classic Beverages Nig. Ltd., ExxonMobil, Wempco Steel Mills Co. Ltd., Notore Chemical Industries Ltd., BUA International Limited, Kaduna Refinery and Petrochemical Company, Dahua Paper Company Limited, Nigeria Bottling Company plants, Nigerian Breweries, among others.
These companies use advanced radiation sources and equipment for quality control purposes such as density measurement in rubber, oils, fabric, and paper; thickness measurement in paper, glass, steel, and plastic films; and level measurement in beverages, cooking oil, and industrial liquids.
They also use them in process control applications such as density monitoring in cement, mud, liquids, and chemical products; level control in vessels, silos, chemical products, and minerals; and moisture measurement in glass, cement, and mineral products. Radiotracers are also applied in fertilizer plants, cement factories, sulphuric acid plants, and other industrial facilities.
Advanced radiation sources used in these manufacturing companies include X-rays, Cesium-137, Cobalt-60, Krypton-85 (encapsulated gas), Strontium-90 (foil source), Promethium-147 (foil source), Americium-241, Americium-241/Beryllium, and Plutonium-238/Beryllium.
