In line with NNRA’s guiding value of being a credible Organization in regulating all apparatus emitting ionizing radiation in the country, the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory (NNRA) met with Ministry of Mines and Steel Development (MMSD) on 28th April, 2021 in its Headquarter in Abuja.
The meeting was geared towards developing modalities to protect and ensure safety of miners from harmful effects of ionizing radiation in the environment of mining activities in the country. It also aimed at measuring and evaluating radiological risk associated with mining activities to ascertain internal exposure of the miners and the general public.
During the meeting, the DG/CEO of the NNRA, Dr. Yau Idris, said that NNRA’s quick intervention in the Jos Plateau survey on Natural Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) imparted greatly on the health of the populace and the environment hence the need for the Authority to be supported in its efforts to bringing miners under regulatory control.
Dr. Yau went further to inaugurate a Committee that will carry out radiological monitoring survey in the mining area and ensure the background level of radiation in the Country’s mining sector is safe. He then encouraged the team to perform maximally within the allotted time so that the submission will get to the Presidency sooner. He assured the committee of his uttermost support at all times.
The Chairman of the inaugurated Committee, Mr. Jacob E. Udoh thanked the NNRA for its efforts in ensuring that citizen lives are protected from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation in the country and pledge to put in their best in order to deliver good results on the assignment.
