NNRA HOSTS EduTA MISSION TO NIGERIA

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in cooperation with the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) conducted an IAEA Expert Mission on Education and Training Appraisal (EduTA) for Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety in Nigeria from 10th-15th October, 2022.

The Mission was requested by Nigeria through the NNRA to appraise the status of national provisions and infrastructures in the area of education and training in radiation, transport and waste safety. The Mission was aimed at identifying areas of improvement to meet the IAEA safety standards and effectively address the national education and training needs.

In his opening remarks, the DG/CEO of NNRA Dr. Yau Idris welcomed the IAEA Experts, Stakeholders and all participants and thanked the IAEA for graciously obliging to the request for the second phase of the mission; the first was held on 14th June, 2021. He stated that the mission will provide opportunity to receive advice on the establishment and sustainable development of national strategy for education and training in radiation, transport and waste safety.  He appreciated the IAEA Experts for availing themselves and affording participants the opportunity to share their wealth of knowledge and experience. He urged participants to cooperate with the Experts in ensuring the success of the mission.

Prof. Augustine Fanu, the IAEA Expert Team Lead from Ghana Nuclear Regulatory Authority (GNRA) stressed that the mission is not conducted for comparison with other countries but rather to help Nigeria assess its training needs in a systematic manner, and to make appropriate recommendations to help Nigeria build neccessary infrastructures in compliance with the IAEA Safety Standards. He thanked the NNRA team for a warm reception and hospitality.

The program had IAEA Experts, Stakeholders from Centre for Energy Research and Training ABU Zaria (CERT), University of Ibadan, Ministry of Petroleum Resources (MPR), Nigerian Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC), Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), National Institute of Radiation Protection and Research, Ibadan (NIRPR) and the NNRA team in attendance.
