NNRA hosts 25 African countries for an IAEA Regional Training Course on Occupational Radiation Protection

The NNRA and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) under Technical Cooperation (TC) Regional Project RAF9070: Enhancing the Radiation   Safety   Infrastructure  (AFRA) is holding the week-long training program in Abuja, Nigeria from 4 to 8 November 2024.

The training which focuses on Occupational Radiation Protection and Optimization in Industrial and Medical Applications aims at enhancing participants' skills and knowledge in managing and controlling occupational exposure to radiation, particularly in industrial and medical settings.

The program addresses the unique challenges and regulatory needs of African member states, striving to build local capacity to protect workers and the environment effectively.

Dr. Yau Idris, NNRA's DG and Chairman of the Forum of Nuclear Regulatory Bodies in Africa (FNRBA), emphasized the importance of national responsibility in radiation safety, highlighting that each member state is responsible for ensuring the safety of facilities and activities involving radiation sources within their territory.

Mr. Richard Van Sansbeeks, an IAEA Consultant encouraged participants to leverage on the training to learn best practices, build friendships and share insights with one another. This collaborative approach, he said is key to advancing and strengthening radiation safety.
