As part of its commitment to ensuring the safe and secure application of ionizing radiation in healthcare, the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) has engaged with INNOVA Healthcare Nigeria Limited on plans to establish additional radiotherapy facilities across Nigeria.
The delegation, led by the President of INNOVA Healthcare Nigeria Limited, Mr. Francis Shokoya, visited the Authority’s headquarters in Abuja to seek regulatory guidance and support for the proposed deployment of radiotherapy equipment for cancer treatment centres. He explained that the initiative, to be implemented with international technical partners, is designed to expand access to safe, high-quality, and affordable cancer care, strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system, and reduce the need for patients to travel abroad for treatment.
Welcoming the delegation, the DG/CEO of the NNRA, Dr. Yau Idris, commended the company for engaging the Authority at the planning stage, describing the proactive approach as a clear demonstration of commitment to regulatory compliance.
Dr. Idris emphasized that all regulatory authorization requirements, including facility design approval, construction oversight, and the installation of radiation-emitting equipment, must be fully satisfied before the commencement of operations. He reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to providing the necessary regulatory guidance to ensure that radiotherapy facilities in Nigeria are established and operated in accordance with national regulations and international safety standards.
