NNRA DISCUSSES NUCLEAR SECURITY ISSUES WITH MINISTER OF DEFENCE

The DG/CEO of NNRA Dr. Yau Idris accompanied by his Management Team had an engagement with His Excellency, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, Minister of Defence, at the Ministry of Defence Headquarters in Abuja on 30th October, 2024.

The discussion focused on areas of collaboration and mutual interest in nuclear safety, security, and radiation protection, towards achieving sustainable development and advancing shared goals.

Nigeria’s accession to  the several International legal instruments bordering on the safety and security  of  nuclear  and  other  radioactive  material  such  as the Convention on Physical   Protection   of   Nuclear Material   (CPPNM);  International   Convention  for   the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism, (ICSSANT) United Nations Security Council Resolutions (UNSCR 1540   and   1373),  Convention   on   Prohibition   of   Nuclear Weapon and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of which the NNRA is coordinating in the country were discussed.

The DG also stated that NNRA is the agency coordinating the implementation of the United Nations Security Council  Resolution 1540  (2004), the Treaties on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (Treaty of Pelindaba).

The NNRA's collaboration with the Ministry of Defence demonstrates the country's dedication to prioritizing safety and security in the nuclear sector and the peaceful uses of nuclear technology globally.
