NNRA COLLABORATES WITH NSCDC TO CURB RADIATION HAZARDS IN THE MINING SECTOR IN PLATEAU STATE

On 18th July, 2023, the Head of Operational office of the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA), Plateau Operational Office and his team paid a courtesy visit to the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC) Plateau State Command.

The purpose was to foster cooperation and collaboration between the NNRA and NSCDC on the safe management of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORMs) residues arising from the mining, milling are processing of mineral ores.

The Acting State Coordinator, Mr.Vontau Nimkur Timkat, stated that NNRA through its Plateau Operational Office is committed to providing protection against the harmful radiation hazards inherent in the mining by ensuring that operators comply with the requirements of the Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Act No. 19 of 1995 and other extant Regulations.

The NSCDC State Commandant, Mr. Alexander Bissa Barunde, stated that the Solid Mineral Department of the Command will collaborate with NNRA to actualize its mandate and ensure that mining companies comply with regulatory standards and internationally accepted best practice. He assured the NNRA of NSCDC’S support in order to guarantee public, worker, and environmental safety.

Mr. Timkat, appreciated the management of NSCDC for granting NNRA audience and the opportunity to collaborate with the Corps.
