NNRA AND THE IAEA ORGANISES A FIVE-DAY NATIONAL WORKSHOP ON THE REVIEW OF THE DRAFT NIGERIAN TRANSPORT SECURITY OF RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL REGULATIONS.

The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is holding a National Workshop on the Review of the Draft Nigerian Transport Security of Radioactive Material Regulations from the 6th -10th November 2023 in Abuja.

The workshop is aimed at providing the IAEA feedback on the technical and legal aspects of the Draft Nigerian Security Regulations in order to finalize the Draft Regulations in line with the provisions of the International instruments, IAEA Nuclear Security Series and Guides.

The DG/CEO, Dr. Yau Idris in his welcome address delivered by his representative, Mr. Mathais Vyonku, General Manager of Administration and Human Resources, stated that Nigeria has been collaborating with the IAEA in the implementation of the activities contained in the Integrated Nuclear Security Support Plan (INSSP) since 2010. He further stated that as a follow up of the INSSP Mission, NNRA in collaboration with the IAEA organized a National Workshop on "Transport Security Regulations for Radioactive Material in Nigeria" in November, 2019. One of the recommendations of the National Workshop was for Nigeria to develop a stand-alone Transport Security Regulations. Consequently, a Draft Transport Security Regulations was developed with the assistance of the IAEA with input from national stakeholders. 

He thanked the IAEA for its relentless efforts in ensuring global nuclear security and enhancing Nigeria's national nuclear security regime while assuring them that NNRA will continue to collaborate with the IAEA in maintaining an effective and sustainable nuclear security regime in Nigeria. 

The Representative of the IAEA, Mr. Jinho Chung said that one of the essential elements of a Transport Security Regime is developing applicable requirements and the essence of the workshop is to help Nigeria create a comprehensive, applicable and practical requirement in line with international recommendations and guidance. He also acknowledged the contributions and support of the NNRA in organizing the workshop.

Other participants at the workshop included; Representatives from the Nigeria Police Force, Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD), Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Africa Global Logistics and Transport Nigeria Limited, Federal Ministry of Justice (FMoJ), Sailbond Shipping Nigeria Limited, Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and members of the press.
