NNRA AND NAEC IN COLLABORATION WITH IAEA CO-HOSTED THE NATIONAL WORKSHOP ON SITE CHARACTERISTICS FOR SAFETY REVIEW EIA AND SAR

The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) and the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) organized a National Workshop on “Site Characteristics important for Safety Review of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Safety Analysis Report (SAR)” in Abuja from 2nd-5th May, 2023.

The objective of the Workshop was to provide technical knowledge and hands-on practice on Safety Review of Environmental Impact Assessment and Safety Analysis Report, with particular emphasis on atmospheric dispersion, hydrogeological and human induced aspects of site data in Nigeria.

At the end of the Workshop, the team of Experts from International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) who facilitated the Workshop visited the Director General/CEO of NNRA, Dr. Yau Idris on Friday 5th May, 2023. The IAEA team was led by the Integrated Work Plan Project Manager, Mr. Hyun Woo Lee of the Division of Nuclear Installation Safety. Other IAEA Experts in the delegation included Ms. Melissa Dubinsky, a Science and Research Consultant, and Mr. Seung Gyn Hyun of the Korean Institute of Nuclear Safety.

The purpose of the visit, according to Mr. Lee was to discuss the outcome of the Workshop, future plans and programmes under the Integrated Work Plan (IWP).

He thanked the DG/CEO and commended the successful hosting of the Workshop. He noted that since the Workshop was organized under the Site and External Event Design Review Service, the IAEA will be willing to conduct SEED Mission to review the regulatory framework for licensing of nuclear power plant sites in Nigeria. He urged the NNRA to take advantage of the opportunities at the IAEA and invite a SEED Review Mission in 2024 under the IWP.

In his response, the DG/CEO appreciated the visit of IAEA Team and congratulated the Experts for facilitating a successful Workshop. He expressed the willingness of the Authority to further collaborate with the IAEA in promoting the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

He opined that the details of future engagements would be discussed at the side meeting of the 2023 General Conference scheduled for September 2023.

The Workshop was co-hosted by the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority and the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC)

The purpose of the visit was to discuss the outcome of the Workshop and future plans and programmes under the Integrated Work Plan (IWP).

The IAEA Team was received in the Office of the DG/CEO and present was the Director General and his Management Team. In his opening remarks, the IAEA Team lead thanked the DG/CEO and commended the successful hosting of the Workshop. He noted that the Workshop was organized under the Site and External Event Design Review Service.

The IAEA Team Expert noted that the IAEA is willing to conduct SEED Mission to review the regulatory framework for licensing of nuclear power plant sites in Nigeria. He urged the NNRA to take advantage of the opportunities at the IAEA and invite a SEED Review Mission in 2024 under the IWP.

In his response, the DG/CEO appreciated the initiative of the visit of IAEA Team and congratulated the Experts for facilitating the conduct of the Workshop. He expressed the willingness of the Authority to further its collaboration with the IAEA.
