The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA), in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE), has concluded a week-long training on the Search and Secure of Radioactive Materials out of Regulatory Control. The grand closing ceremony held today at the Transcorps Hilton, Abuja.
The Director General/CEO of the NNRA, Dr. Yau Idris expressed deep appreciation to the United States for its continuous support in enhancing Nigeria's nuclear security. He emphasized that as a large country, Nigeria must take the issue of nuclear security seriously, particularly with regards to radioactive materials that are outside of regulatory control and could pose risk or harm or cause national embarrassment to the country if not adequately safeguarded.
Dr. Idris further stressed the critical need for proper equipment to detect radioactive materials, noting that human efforts alone are insufficient and inefficient.
He extended his gratitude to Mr. Stephen Simpson, Economic Officer of the United States Embassy for attending the event and thanked the USDOE experts for sharing their knowledge with participants throughout the training.
Mr. Stephen Simpson in his response, congratulated all participants for completing the workshop and commended the NNRA on its relentless efforts in ensuring nuclear safety in the country as well as enhancing its nuclear security regime.
He stated that the NNRA, since its inception, has shown itself to be an engageing counterpart in advancing the secure management and storage of radioactive material, which has helped in preventing health hazards, theft and sabotage of such material for malicious purposes. He encouraged NNRA to continue striving towards ensuring a safe and more secure Nigeria.
