NNRA, NNSCC PARTNER TO STRENGTHEN NUCLEAR SECURITY THROUGH CAPACITY-BUILDING TRAINING

The NNRA, in collaboration with the National Nuclear Security and Coordination Center (NNSCC), has organised a five-day Nuclear Security Awareness Training Programme for critical airport personnel in Abuja. The programme is designed to strengthen participants’ capacity to protect nuclear and other radioactive materials against theft, unauthorised access, sabotage, and other malicious acts through enhanced vigilance, improved security awareness, and effective inter-agency coordination.

Speaking at the opening of the programme, the DG/CEO of the NNRA, Dr. Yau Usman Idris, stated that the initiative was aimed at equipping frontline personnel with the requisite knowledge and skills to prevent, detect, and respond appropriately to potential nuclear security incidents. He emphasised that safeguarding nuclear and radioactive materials is a critical component of national security, noting that frontline security personnel play a vital role as the first line of defence at airports, border crossings, seaports, checkpoints, and other designated points of entry and exit.

In his remarks, the Coordinator of the NNSCC, Dr. Humphrey Mac-Eteli, expressed appreciation to the participants for their engagement and urged them to maximise the benefits of the training. He highlighted the strategic role of frontline personnel in identifying suspicious activities, recognising potential radiological threats, and initiating timely response procedures. He further underscored the importance of sustained vigilance, inter-agency collaboration, and adherence to established security protocols in preventing the illicit movement of nuclear and other radioactive materials and strengthening Nigeria’s overall nuclear security framework.
