NNRA, DSS AND NISS ORGANISE TRAINING ON NUCLEAR SECURITY

The Nuclear Week of the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS)  for Executive Intelligence Management Course 13 tagged “Piracy in the Gulf of Guinea: Issues and Challenges for International Trade, National Security and Sustainable Development of Member State” jointly organized by The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) and Department of State Services (DSS) is holding from 29th June to 3rd July, 2020 in Abuja.

The Nuclear Week is aimed at educating the participants on the Nuclear Security and Regulatory functions of the NNRA which is primarily to protect human lives, health, properties and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation, safety and security of radioactive sources and nuclear materials. It is also to impact basic knowledge on the safe uses of nuclear science and technology including its future in the socio economic development of Nigeria.

Dr. Yau Idris, Director General/CEO of NNRA, in his keynote lecture said the theme for this year’s Nuclear Security Week is apt due to the increased movement of radioactive sources around the Gulf of Guinea. He expressed his appreciation to the collaborating organizations and thanked them for giving NNRA the opportunity to be part of the Nuclear Security week where the issue of nuclear security is discussed at the highest levels.

The Commandant, National Institute for Security Studies (NISS); Mr. Ayodele S. Adeleke while declaring the training open on behalf of the Director General of the DSS, Mr. Yusuf M. Bichi said the training would improve the participants’ knowledge on nuclear security, detection of radioactive sources, insider threats and mitigation of such threats.

The Director of Studies, Dr. A.M Wali expressed appreciation to the NNRA for their constant support and partnership with the DSS and NISS. He said the course participants will benefit immensely from the training especially in the area of insider threat and its effect on national security.

The training participants, who are undergoing the ten months EIMC 13 2020 course at the NISS, are Senior Officers from different security and law enforcement agencies from Nigeria, Ghana and The Gambia.
