NIGERIAN NUCLEAR REGULATORY AUTHORITY HOLDS STRATEGIC RETREAT

The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority held a three-day Management Retreat from 31st October – 2nd November 2019, at the Southern Sun Hotel Lagos. The Retreat had as its theme “Attaining Effective and Efficient Performance”. The thrust of the programme was for Management to reflect on its activities in 2019, outline challenges and chart the way forward for greater accomplishments in 2020. It is worthy of mention that the last Management Retreat was held over seven years ago.

The Retreat was aimed at improving on the Authority’s processes as well as attaining effective and efficient performance. The Retreat discussed the following:

1.

  • Reflect on NNRA’s journey, the Challenges, Prospects and Measure success;
  • To steer interaction for developing a practical Strategic Plan that could be implemented;
  • Encourage staff networking and building working relationship with staff from other divisions/departments to achieve organizational goals ;
  • Beyond the Retreat, help NNRA implement the Strategic Plan by building staff  capacity;
  • Challenges of implementation of the Regulatory Authority
  • Authorization & Enforcement: Status and Challenges in NNRA
  • NNRA’s level of compliance in adopting Contemporary issues and challenges in the application of International Best Practices of Nuclear Safety, Physical Security and Safeguards;
  • Work ethics and Employees involvement

2.   Presentations were made by all Heads of Departments, Zonal Coordinators and the National Institute of Radiation Protection and Research (NIRPR), Ibadan.

The papers highlighted the under listed observations and recommendations which seek to improve the operational processes at various levels such as;

  • Operational Performance and Mismatch in the NNRA Value Chain- Challenges of implementation of the Regulatory Authority
  • Authorization & Enforcement Status and Challenges in NNRA
  • NNRA’s level of compliance in adopting Contemporary issues and challenges in the application of International Best Practices of Nuclear Safety, Physical Security and Safeguards
  • Work ethics and Employees involvement
  • Work-life balance/ Wellness Management for Peak Performance

Group and table talk sessions were also held where each group was given brainstorming task on ways to achieve the institutional goals and objectives as well as promoting unity and cordiality in the NNRA.

In concluding the retreat, the Acting DG/CEO thanked Management for their contributions and assured Management that recommendations would be implemented. He also promised to work in synergy with the team and enjoined all hands be on board to move the NNRA forward.

The Retreat was attended the Acting Director General/CEO, top Management Staff, middle and operational Managers.
