NIGERIA ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION (NAEC) PARLEY WITH MEDIA

In its continuous effort to bridge the communication gap between the nuclear sector and the public, a one day Media Parley on the Implementation of Nigeria’s National Nuclear Energy Programme and the Benefit of Nigeria’s Technical Cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), held on 17th December 2020.

The purpose of the interactive session was to create public awareness and communication strategy that will sensitize members of the press and the public on Nigeria’s National Energy Programme and various Counterpart Project being undertaken by Nigeria in collaboration with the IAEA.

The DG/CEO of the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) Dr. Yau Idris, who was ably represented by Dr. Nasiru Bello, General Manager, Nuclear Safety Physical Security and Safeguards, congratulated the management of NAEC for organizing such an important interactive meeting. He emphasized that IAEA needs to be referenced because Nigeria has benefitted greatly by collaborating with them. He advised NAEC to encourage the habit of carrying the media along for site seeing in order to encourage proper message being passed across to the public and in the process gaining the trust of public in the safe operation of nuclear technology in the country.   

The Acting Chairman/ CEO of NAEC, Engineer Mukhtar Ali, appreciated the press crew and all participants for honoring the invitation. He submitted that the meeting was designed to establish effective cooperation between the commission and the media which will enhance public awareness and understanding on the benefits of nuclear science and technology and the numerous ways it will benefit the nation at large.

He said the success of the public acceptance of nuclear programme truly lies in the hands of the media who will analyse and present the message in an acceptable manner. He appreciated IAEA for the support and collaboration rendering to Nigeria especially in the technical aspect.
