The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA), in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Radiological Security (USDOE/ORS), has launched an advanced workshop on the Search and Secure of Radioactive Materials Out of Regulatory Control (MORC). The five-day program, running from 8–12 September 2025, builds on 2024 training and focuses on advanced detection techniques, field coordination, and strengthened safety and security measures.
Representing DG/CEO Dr. Yau Usman Idris, Mr. Olatunji Okoya, General Manager of the Nuclear Safety and Security Department, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to nuclear security, noting significant progress since 2008 in recovering abandoned radioactive sources. He highlighted U.S.-provided expertise and equipment now integrated into the National Security Detection Architecture (NSDA) and the draft National Strategy for MORC.
Dr. Idris encouraged participants to embrace their role as future trainers to help solidify Nigeria’s leadership in nuclear security across Africa. He commended the USDOE/ORS and national stakeholders for their support, while lead expert Mr. Roman Abraham Kahn emphasized the workshop’s critical role in strengthening Nigeria’s security infrastructure. The workshop has in attendance 26 participants comprising regulators, law enforcement, and security agencies.
