MINISTRY OF MINES AND STEEL DEVELOPMENT COLLABORATES WITH THE NNRA IN REGULATING THE EXPLORATION, MINING, AND MILLING OF RADIOACTIVE ORES

The Director General/CEO of Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority, Dr. Yau Idris joined the Minister for State, Mines and Steel Development (MMSD) Hon. DR. Uchechukwu S. Ogah in his office in Abuja for a meeting with Clarisiver Solutions Limited. The representative of the Director General of Nigerian Mining Cadastre office (MCO) and representatives of various technical departments in MMSD were also in attendance at the meeting, which held on 3^rd March, 2021.

The meeting aimed at collaborating with the NNRA in regulating the exploration, mining, and milling of radioactive ores in Nigeria.

The NNRA DG highlighted some of the mandates of the NNRA which centered on the protection and safeguarding the health and safety of miners, the public and the environment from the harmful effects of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) as required by the Nuclear Safety  An Radiation Protection Acts of 1995.

It was concluded, that only NNRA have the mandate to categorize and licence as appropriate the exploration, mining and milling of radioactive ores and other ores associated with the presence of radioactive substances in Nigeria.
