MEMBERS, HOUSE COMMITTEE ON PETROLEUM RESOURCES CARRIED OUT OVERSIGHT FUNCTION AT NNRA

The DG/CEO and Management Staff of the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) received Members, House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream) on an oversight function visit on the 23rd of November, 2021 at the NNRA Headquarters, Abuja.

The visit was to carry out a routine oversight of NNRA's activities in line with the provision of the Acts of National Assembly, Policies, and Programmes approved in the National Budget.

The DG/CEO NNRA, Dr. Yau Idris while welcoming the Committee members highlighted the mandate and responsibilities of the NNRA in line with the provision of the Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Act of 1995. He enumerated the sectors which the Authority regulates and issues licenses for the use of radioactive materials while ensuring the safe application of these sources. The sectors include Health, Oil and Gas, Agriculture and Water Resources, Mining/Construction, Manufacturing, Education and Research as well as Security Agencies. He then thanked the Committee for its consistent support to the Authority.

In response, Honorable Preye Oseke, Deputy Chairman of the Committee who stood in for the Chairman, Honorable Musa Sarki Adar, and who also led the Members said the visit was to oversee the activities of the NNRA particularly from January to date. He stated that, the importance of nuclear energy in the development of a modern society cannot be underscored and therefore Nigeria cannot be an exception in the drive to utilize nuclear energy for the purpose of promotion and rapid development in the Country. He reiterated the Committee's commitment to continually support and cooperate with the NNRA to ensure good delivery on its mandate while maximizing the public resources.

The committee members applauded the NNRA for their resilient effort in protecting live and environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation and thereafter adopted the submissions of the NNRA for further consideration.
