The Management Staff of the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) on 9th June, 2022 received a team from the Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State, led by the Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University, Prof. J.S Rabo, to a courtesy visit at the NNRA Headquarters in Abuja.
The visit, according to Prof. Rabo was to seek for ways of effective collaboration with the Authority, with regards to the use and application of radioactive materials in the State owned General Hospital which has been released by the Taraba State Government to the Federal Ministry of Health for upgrade and to be used as the University Teaching Hospital. He stated that the upgrade of the Teaching Hospital would require in earnest the acquisition of X-Ray machines and the likes for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes hence the need to seek for proper guidance and cooperation of the Authority in its capacity as a competent regulatory body that ensures the peaceful uses of all nuclear materials. This, he said, will enable proper take off of the Teaching Hospital and its smooth operations.
He thanked the DG/CEO, Dr. Yau Idris and his Management Team for granting them audience while commending the Authority for its efforts in ensuring the protection of lives, health, property and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation.
The DG/CEO NNRA, Dr. Yau Idris appreciated the VC and his team for the visit. He briefed the team on the establishment and functions of the Authority which is primarily to ensure nuclear safety and radiological protection in Nigeria. He submitted that the decision to upgrade the General Hospital Wukari to a University Teaching Hospital is a welcome development. He urged the team to seize the enormous opportunity in nuclear medicine especially radiotherapy as it will help in the treatment of cancer patients and related ailment in Taraba State and its environs.
At the end of the meeting, the Management of NNRA implored the team from the Federal University, Wukari to develop a workable Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for consideration by both parties as it would afford Staff especially those in the North East Zonal Office, Gombe the opportunity to further study on nuclear related disciplines.
