EUROPEAN UNION INSTRUMENT FOR INTERNATIONAL NUCLEAR SAFETY COOPERATION (INSC) PROJECT "INCREASED CAPACITY AND CAPABILITIES OF THE NIGERIAN NUCLEAR REGULATORY AUTHORITY”, NG3.01/22" (INSC/2023/446-831): REVIEW OF THE STATUS OF THE NNRA REGULATORY FRAMEWORK.

Mr. Jouko Mononen of Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) International visited the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) for the commencement of the European Union Instrument for International Nuclear Safety Cooperation (INSC) Project "Increased Capacity and Cap]abilities of the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority” from 19th to 23rd January 2024.

The objective of the Meeting was to assess the status of the NNRA's Regulatory Framework for Nuclear Safety and discuss plans for its further development. In addition, the meeting was also to review the level of Implementation of the Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) recommendations of 2017 related to task 1.

The Meeting focused on the legislative framework including Nuclear Safety, Security and Safeguard Bill (NSS Bill), Plan for developing the Regulations and Guides, Status of the existing Regulations and Guides (finalized and draft), and Draft of a new Guide for the Licensing Process for Nuclear Power Plants in Nigeria.

The STUK Expert and that of NNRA provided invaluable insights and recommendations for the NNRA on the NNRA Regulatory Framework. These recommendations are intended to strengthen the existing regulatory framework and address the emerging challenges and complexities faced by the Authority.
