EUROPEAN UNION’S PROJECT ADVANCES NNRA’S NUCLEAR SAFETY CAPABILITIES THROUGH HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT

The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) received Mr. Benoit Bernard from the Technical Support Organization of the Belgian Nuclear Safety Administration and Mr. Matjaz Podjavorsek from the Slovenian Nuclear Safety Administration (SNSA) to the NNRA Headquarters, in Abuja from 29th January to 2nd February, 2024.

The visit marks the initiation of Task Group 3, focusing on Human Resources Development, under the “Increased Capacity and Capabilities of the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority” project funded by the European Union Instrument for International Nuclear Safety Cooperation (INSC).

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Yau Idris, DG/CEO of NNRA, expressed a warm welcome to the Experts and highlighted the pivotal role of international collaboration in enhancing nuclear safety practices. He emphasized the commitment of NNRA to continually improve its capabilities for the safe regulation of nuclear activities in Nigeria.

The European Union INSC project, with a comprehensive agenda for NNRA, encompasses five crucial tasks, with the ongoing focus on Human Resource Development being the third in line. This phase aims to fortify NNRA’s overall capacity by addressing key aspects of competence management, human resources practices, processes, knowledge management, and knowledge networks.

During the discussions, the experts provided valuable insights and recommendations to tailor a standardized Human Resource and Training Plan, aligning with NNRA’s specific competence needs for nuclear safety regulation. The collaborative efforts are poised to elevate NNRA’s capabilities, ensuring a robust framework for the continuous enhancement of nuclear safety measures in Nigeria.
