Dr. Yau Idris, the Director General/CEO of the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA), paid a visit to the Minister of State for Health and Social Services, Dr. Tunji Alausa. In a significant meeting held on January 18, 2024, at the minister’s office, Dr. Alausa expressed concerns related to the lack of compliance by government-owned hospitals with the regulatory requirements set forth by NNRA.
The Director General/CEO of NNRA shed light on the issue, emphasizing that many government hospitals fail to involve the NNRA from the initial stages of their operations. He elaborated on NNRA’s efforts to bring these facilities under regulatory control, aiming to ensure the utmost protection of both workers and patients from excessive exposure to ionizing radiation in the country.
To provide a comprehensive overview, the DG/CEO presented a brief on the status of the nine government-owned radiotherapy centers.
The gravity of the situation became apparent as it was revealed that only three centers had achieved full compliance and received operation licenses.
This revelation left the Honourable Minister disappointed, highlighting the urgent need for measures to ensure regulatory adherence across all government-owned healthcare facilities
