The DG of NNRA Dr. Yau Idris had a virtual meeting with the DG of NEA Dr. William Magwood on the possibility of African countries joining and benefiting from the activities of the NEA.
The NEA is the only intergovernmental agency which brings together a selection of countries from the Americas, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region in a non-political forum dedicated to sharing and disseminating state of the art knowledge in the field of nuclear energy.
In the meeting the DG of NEA William D. Magwood indicated that they are now planning to incorporate Africa in their activities and the look up to Nigeria to play a leading role.
He indicated that NEA is currently working with the World Bank to see the possibility of the bank financing nuclear technology around the world.
Concerned with the rapidly increasing energy needs of post-World War II European economic recovery, and particularly the possibilities presented by nuclear power, the Council of the Organization for European Economic Co-operation (OEEC) [predecessor of the OECD] set up the European Nuclear Energy Agency (ENEA) in February 1958. The Agency’s name was changed in 1972 to the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) to reflect its growing membership beyond Europe’s boundaries.
