DG/CEO NNRA HOSTS REPRESENTATIVES FROM CNNC

The DG/CEO, Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA), Dr. Yau Idris with other Management staff of the Authority received representatives from the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) at the NNRA headquarters in Abuja on 8th March, 2023.

The visit according to Mr. Chen Hongyu, the CNNC Team Lead, was to foster bilateral cooperation with NNRA and Nigeria as a whole in the area of nuclear related activities in both countries.  He stated that CNNC has been in partnership with Nigeria for several years since the inception of the reactor in CERT ABU Zaria and that their mission is to establish the CNNC sub-Sahara African Office in Abuja that will provide technical support and necessary man power development in Cancer initiatives projects, Gamma Irradiation facilities, nuclear medicine facilities, radiation oncology facilities and Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) project amongst others.

He said, in order to effectively provide meaningful service to Nigeria, there is need to understand her nuclear regulations which are paramount to facilitating cooperation and enhancing good service delivery; hence the need to network with NNRA to achieve the set goal. He thanked the DG/CEO NNRA and his team for the warm reception and audience.

The DG/CEO NNRA, Dr. Yau Idris while responding highlighted the functions of the Authority which is primarily to ensure nuclear safety and radiation protection. He said the CNNC proposal is a welcome idea as the Authority will provide them with all the regulations and guidance to ensure nuclear safety applications thereby protecting life, health and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation. He assured the team of NNRA’s unflinching support in achieving the set goal for better service delivery in the country.

The CNNC team came in company of some Management Staff of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC).
