Faculty members and participants of the Executive Intelligence Management Course (EIMC) 15 from the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS) Bwari, Abuja, visited the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) Headquarters in Abuja, on 16th February, 2022.
The Deputy Commandant and Director of Study, D. E. Egbeji, fsi+ fdc, appreciated the NNRA for the warm reception and said that the theme for this years’ Course-“Global Climate Challenges: Prospects and Priorities for Economic Development and Conflict Resolution in Africa” propelled the visit to the Authority. He stated that the Course participants which are drawn from different Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) are keen to know more about NNRA’s regulatory functions and its efforts on the issues of global climate change in the country.
Dr. Yau Idris DG/CEO NNRA, warmly welcomed the Team and enumerated the functions/mandates of the NNRA. He said that the NNRA is established by Act 19 of 1995 with the sole aim of regulating all materials and equipment capable of emitting ionizing radiation in the country. He explained that the Oil and Gas, Health, Mining, Construction, Customs and Security, Manufacturing, Agriculture, Research and Development amongst others are some of the sectors regulated by the NNRA due to their operations.
Dr. Yau, also stated that the impact of climate change are undeniable and the world must reduce its dependency on fossil fuels to minimize greenhouse gas emission thereby, focusing more on nuclear energy which is low-carbon, clean, reliable and affordable electricity. He advised that the participants be taken to the Research Reactor in Zaria and SHEDA Science and Technology Complex (SHESTCO) where the GAMMA IRRADIATOR is situated for better experience of the NNRA regulatory functions in Research and Development.
He wished the Participants a successful Course and assured the Institute of NNRA’s continued support. The EIMC 15 had 23 participants and the NNRA is proud to have fellows from the Institute.
