CTBTO EXECUTIVE SECRETARY VISITS NNRA TO STRENGTHEN NUCLEAR TEST-BAN COLLABORATION

The Director General/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA), Dr. Yau Usman Idris, today welcomed the Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), Dr. Robert Floyd, at the NNRA Headquarters in Abuja. Dr. Floyd was accompanied by the Acting Chairman of the Nigerian Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC), Engr. Anthony Ekedegwa, and their respective teams.

Dr. Floyd’s visit to Nigeria is aimed at reinforcing cooperation and promoting enhanced data sharing among key stakeholders, particularly in the detection of nuclear-based tests. This includes the timely exchange of critical information on earth and surface movements such as explosions, tremors, and earthquakes—essential components of the global verification regime of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT).

In his remarks, Dr. Idris emphasized the NNRA’s core mandate, which includes regulating and licensing nuclear and radiological activities in Nigeria, protecting lives and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation, and ensuring compliance with national laws and international nuclear safety and security obligations.

Dr. Floyd has met with top government officials and stakeholders during his visit, with a focus on deepening Nigeria’s commitment to the CTBT and fostering collaborative efforts in nuclear non-proliferation and verification.
