The NNRA North Central Zonal Coordinator, Mr. Philip Abumere, presented functions, achievements and challenges of the North Central Zonal office today at the NNRA Weekly In-House Seminar.
During his presentation, Mr. Abumere outlined the key responsibilities of the zonal office, emphasizing regulatory oversight of radiation and nuclear activities in the North Central zone. He noted that the office collaborates with state and federal agencies to carry out inspections, reporting, enforcement, emergency response coordination, and public awareness campaigns, which are critical to ensuring the safe and secure use of ionizing radiation within the region.
Highlighting recent achievements, Mr. Abumere reported the successful issuance of two Registration of Premises Certificates and the carrying out of six enforcement actions. These measures were aimed at enforcing compliance with the NNRA’s safety regulations, thereby safeguarding public health and strengthening the Authority’s regulatory presence in the zone.
An industrial attachment program for regulators was also introduced in partnership with diagnostic radiology facilities. The initiative he said enhances the technical expertise of regulatory staff through hands-on exposure to clinical operations. Additionally, he mentioned the commencement of the authorization process for the region’s first radiotherapy facility at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) Cancer Centre, a significant milestone that underscores NNRA’s support for expanding life-saving healthcare services.
