NNRA SEEKS STRONGER REGULATORY COLLABORATION WITH NUPRC TO ENHANCE SAFETY AND COMPLIANCE IN OIL AND GAS SECTOR

NNRA DG, Dr. Yau Usman Idris, today paid a courtesy visit to the Commission Chief Executive of NUPRC, Mrs. Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, to strengthen inter-agency collaboration and improve regulatory efficiency in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

Dr. Idris highlighted NNRA’s mandate and referenced Section 225 of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), which mandates compliance with nuclear safety and radiation protection standards in the handling of radioactive materials within the petroleum industry. He sought enhanced cooperation with NUPRC in data sharing on licensed oil wells, permitting and licensing, management of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORMs), joint inspections, emergency preparedness, radioactive waste monitoring, and capacity building.

In response, Mrs. Eyesan emphasized the importance of regulatory coordination to avoid duplication and ensure effective implementation of the PIA. She reaffirmed NUPRC’s commitment to collaboration and supported key areas of partnership, including the appointment of focal persons, improved data sharing through digital systems, joint inspections, and harmonized licensing processes.

Both agencies reaffirmed their commitment to closer collaboration aimed at strengthening regulatory efficiency, safety, environmental protection, and sustainable development in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
