NNRA AND US OFFICE OF RADIOLOGICAL SAFETY ORGANIZES WORKSHOP ON OPERATING PROCEDURE FOR TRANSPORT OF NUCLEAR AND OTHER RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL IN LAGOS

The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) and US Department of Energy (DoE), Office of Radiological Safety (ORD) Organized a Workshop on Transport Control Center (TCC) and Operating Procedure For Transport of Nuclear and other Radioactive Material in Lagos.

The workshop which took place from 7 to 12 July 2025 was a bold step towards strengthen Nigeria’s nuclear security infrastructure on of the key focus of the visionary leadership of DG/CEO Dr. Yau Idris, hosted a high-level national workshop from 7th – 11th July 2025.

Key participants included the Nigerian Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and NNRA, NNRA Licensees and transporters of radioactive material. The workshop focused on two core objectives:

  1. Equipping participants with the knowledge and skills to deploy and operate the Transport Security Tracking and Reporting (T-STAR) System for real-time monitoring of radioactive material during transport; and
  2. Building national capacity to develop, test, and review Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to support the effective operation of the Transport Control Centre.

This first-of-its-kind deployment of the TCC in Nigeria integrates location tracking with security sensor monitoring, ensuring continuous assessment of the security status of radioactive material shipments.

Speaking on behalf of the DG/CEO, Mr. Olatunji Okoya, GM, Nuclear Safety and Security, welcomed technical experts led by Michael Shannon, and commended ORS for its unwavering partnership since 2016. He reiterated NNRA’s commitment to staying ahead of emerging threats and enhancing national capacity across all levels of nuclear transport security.
