NNRA AND NATIONAL COUNTER TERRORISM CENTRE (NCTC) STRENGTHEN COLLABORATION ON NATIONAL NUCLEAR SECURITY

The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA), through its National Nuclear Security Coordination Centre (NNSCC), has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening inter-agency cooperation with the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) under the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), following a high-level meeting held on wednesday, November 26, 2025, at the ONSA headquarters in Abuja.

The meeting, which commenced at 12:00 PM, brought together the Coordinator of the NCTC, Major Gen. Adamu Garba Laka, and the Coordinator of the NNSCC, Dr. Humphrey Mac-eteli, alongside their respective teams.

Opening the session, Dr. Mac-eteli underscored the long-standing relationship between both centres and stressed the urgent need for stronger collaboration in areas critical to national security, including knowledge-management systems, crime-scene handling involving radioactive or nuclear materials, inter-agency coordination, and addressing funding constraints that impact operations.

In his remarks, NCTC Coordinator Laka highlighted the rising global and regional risks associated with nuclear and radiological materials, emphasizing that Nigeria must remain proactive and prepared. He reaffirmed the readiness of the NCTC to work closely with the NNRA in strengthening national nuclear security frameworks and improving structured engagements across relevant agencies.

The meeting ended with a shared commitment to reinforcing Nigeria’s preparedness and response capabilities in the face of evolving nuclear security threats. The NNRA reiterated its determination to continue working closely with national and international partners to safeguard the country against any misuse or unauthorized handling of nuclear and radiological materials.
