The 22nd Meeting of the Steering Committee (SC) of the Forum of Nuclear Regulatory Bodies in Africa (FNRBA), taking place in Rabat, Morocco from 2 to 6 June 2025, is chaired by Dr. Yau Idris, the Director General of NNRA and Chairperson of FNRBA. The theme of the meeting is “Consolidating Support for Regulatory Oversight of Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security in Africa.”
The meeting, sponsored by the IAEA and its partners, is being hosted by the Moroccan Agency for Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security (AMSSNuR). Delegates include Mr Said Mouline, DG of AMSSNuR; Mr Sammy Shaaban, DG of the Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority (ENRRA); Mr James Chumba, DG of the Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority representing East Africa; Ms Ndeye Arame Faye, DG of the Senegalese Authority for Radiation Protection, Nuclear Safety and Security (ARSN); Mr Reda Nour, Secretary General of AMSSNuR representing North Africa; and Emmanuel Ampomah-Amoako, Secretary of the Forum.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was represented by the Director of the Office of Safety and Security Coordination, Fuming Jiang. IAEA Project Management Officers (PMO) also in attendance include: Ms Seungyeon Son (IAEA NSOC), Mr Felix Omonya Wanjala, TCAF, Mr Richard Samba (IAEA NSNS), Ms Rana Ahmed(IAEA IEC), Ms Merinda Volia of Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety and Mr Steven Dhlomo.
Partners attending the meeting include His Excellency Ousmane Alkhasoun from the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE), Mr. Jorge Tirira of ASNR/European Union, Mr Woonkap Cho from KINS Korea, Ms Maureen Conley of USNRC, Mr. Jean-Luc Lachaume of HERCA and Mr Innocent Batsani-Ncube of UKRI Cross Research Council
The six Regional Technical Coordinators were all present and made presentations on their achievements and work plans for the coming years.
The objectives of the meeting are: to provide updates from the IAEA Secretariat and Agency interventions; to report on actions taken to maintain collaboration with partners; to present achievements for 2024-2025 and the Activity Plan for 2025-2026; to provide an analysis of regional needs based on a common survey; to discuss the implementation of the Strategic Plan and inputs into IAEA Safety Standards and Security Guidance Development and Implementation in member states; to carry out a group discussion on topical issues based on identified needs; to hold a discussion with AFCONE on nuclear and radiological safety and security in Africa; and to draft the agenda for the 17th Plenary Meeting.
