In a bid to ensure the protection of life, property and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation, the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) has donated a Radiation Portal Monitor (RPM) to the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). The radiation Monitoring facility was handed over to FAAN after a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) document was signed in a ceremony on the 8Th of October 2019 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Cargo terminal premises in Abuja.
In his remark, Dr. Yau Usman Idris, Acting DG/CEO of the NNRA, stated that Authority donated the device to FAAN with the aim of preventing incidences of radiation sources trafficking and illegal importations. While remembering some illicit radiation sources trafficking that the NNRA had handled in the past, Dr. Yau stated that the monitor being installed in the Cargo terminal of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport is the pioneer set, as similar devices will be installed in airports and seaports all over Nigeria.
Representing the FAAN MD/CEO, Rabiu Yadudu, FAAN Head of Legal, Clifford Imade Omozeghian pledged that FAAN will abide by the agreements contained in the MOU and uphold all arrangements with the NNRA. He further thanked the NNRA for their goodwill and determination to keep Nigeria and Nigerians safe from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation. He also stated that safety and security are some of the core objectives of the FAAN.
Radiation Portal Monitors (RPMs) are passive radiation detection devices used for the screening of Pedestrians, vehicles, cargo for detection of radioactive materials or radiation contamination. They are designed to detect traces of radiation emission from objects passing through them and are highly reliable in the prevention of radiological threats and accidents
In attendance were management and representatives of NNRA, FAAN and the media.
